Thanksgiving

Ahhh a great American holiday: surrounded by family and friends, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, American football and a FANTASTIC meal.

Now I now that a lot of people think that Thanksgiving is all about us Americans being thankful that we are no longer under British rule, but that is not the case (that is the 4th of July :p). Thanksgiving is about being thankful for your family, friends and all the good things in your life.

A few years ago, before I moved to the UK, my mother and I started spending Thanksgiving with a group of low income retirees. We would cook dinner for everyone and then sit down to a nice meal. I use to enjoy listening to them while they told stories about when they were younger. Then roll my eyes when they started complaining about life now and how expensive everything is.

Now that I live here in the UK I really miss the Thanksgiving Holiday. It makes me a little homesick. Calls to my family and friends to wish them a great day and to hear that they are gathering together to celebrate makes me wish that I could join them.

Another great tradition this time of year occurs tomorrow. The Biggest Shopping Day of the year is of course the Friday after Thanksgiving. A lot of my friends will be getting up at 5:00 tomorrow morning to be one of the first few people in a store in order to save some money on Christmas gifts. It seems this year with the Global Financial Crisis everyone is shopping for sales.

However to avoid the crowds, isn’t it amazing that now you don’t actually have to go to the stores to buy gifts. You can complete a lot of your shopping online. You can get just about anything you would like, including those hard to find items, from the internet. If you want to save more money, go to RewardPig.com and you will see that your able to receive a lot of items by just completing a few offers at a fraction of the item’s actual cost. For example the new must have Elmo Live and the Nintendo Wii Fit.

So, in closing, I’d like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Divinely Discontented

Thought I’d let you all know out there that I went to a comedy night last Friday – I know, I know, you all thought I was chained to the Giveaway Support desk, well sometimes Tab lets me loose, only sometimes mind!

So, comedy… … a couple of up-and-coming acts, a couple of ‘find a new career mate’ acts (you know how it is!) and one outstanding act – Terry Alderton.  Who?  you may ask.  I was ignorant myself, but this guy is funny.  On checking him out, I find he’s made quite a few tv appearances, and even starred (tho’ blink and you’ll miss him!) in the Brit classic ‘Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’.

If you want to see some of this guy’s act (can’t remember seeing anyone with quite such a vocal talent – for mimicry, accents and special effects), then click here.  The site has lots of info on him, including some from Terry himself (ok, so he’s not much of a writer, but he is a comic talent), you’ll also see where he’s appearing next, and be able to watch clips of him from his links to You Tube and Virgin Media.  ‘Divinely Discontented’ is his act from the Edinburgh Comedy Fest. 2006, there’s a clip of this on the site too.

BUT, if you’re chained to your desk as much as I am (!) and aren’t able to catch this guy’s act.  Then why not head on over to RewardPig and treat yourself to some free comic DVDs from Amazon, or even Lock Stock if you missed out on this back in ’98 (was it really that long ago?!).  In this incessantly wet weather, raise a smile and raise it for free!!

Hedge your bets now! Does God exist?

I came across a story last week about an Atheist group (The British Humanist Association) trying to raise funding for a London bus ad campaign. The donation page can be found here.

The slogon on the ad’s will read “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.” Now all arguments for or against religion and the existence of God aside, as it can be a very explosive subject, I am quite pleased to see ad’s promoting the Atheist point of view. It’ll make a nice change from being told that “Jesus Saves” and that I should repent or burn in Hell.

The campaigns goal was just £5,500.00, but it has reached a total of £117,378.00 as of today, an amazing amount. A message on the donation page says that the money will now be used to roll out the ad campaigns across britain, and to extend the campaign with new slogons and ad’s. So expect to see an ad near you sometime in the New Year

Online bookmaker Paddy Power are running odds of 4-1 that God exists, and punters have so far placed £5000 with Paddy Power:

A spokesman for Paddy Power said that confirmation of God’s existence would have to be verified by scientists and given by an independent authority before any payouts were made, however.

He added: “The atheists’ planned advertising campaign seems to have renewed the debate in pubs and around office water-coolers as to whether there is a God and we’ve seen some of that being transferred into bets.

“However we advise anyone still not sure of God’s existence to maybe hedge their bets for now, just in case.”
